European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

An EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) will enable you to access state-provided healthcare in European Economic Area (EEA) countries, including Switzerland, at a reduced cost, or sometimes for free. It will cover your treatment until you return to the UK.The card is not an alternative to travel insurance.

The card  is free of charge and you can apply or renew a card via the official EHIC online application form. Beware of unofficial websites, which may charge if you apply through them.

Following the results of the EU referendum, no changes have yet been announced to the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) service. The NHS Business Services Authority is continuing to provide the EHIC service as usual, and you can apply for and use your card as before.

To apply either call using the automated telephone service on 0300 3301350 provided by the NHS Business Services authority or go online. For further information about applying, renewing or general travel health advice visit our Travel Health section.
