A bicarbonate test, also known as a CO2 test, is used to screen electrolyte or acid-base (pH) imbalances.

It is usually part of a collection of tests used to investigate the kidney (renal profile).

A bicarbonate test may be carried out as part of
a routine physical examination or recommended if you are experiencing symptoms such as:

  • weakness
  • confusion
  • repeated vomiting
  • breathing problems

These symptoms could be the result of an electrolyte imbalance or acidosis or alkalosis (where the acid or alkaline levels in the body's fluids and tissues are abnormally high).
