Eye drops can be used for a number of conditions which include dryness, redness, infection, allergies, itching, soreness, swelling and eye discharge. Follow the instructions about how to use the drops effectively. Eye drops can be bought over the counter for some eye conditions but for more serious conditions then you should see your GP.
Antacids can help relieve symptoms of heartburn, trapped wind or stomach pain. Antacids come in different forms - chewable tablets, dissolvable tablets or liquid.
Paracetamol, Aspirin and ibuprofen
These painkillers are effective in relieving some minor aches and pains e.g. headaches or menstrual pains. They can also help to relieve symptoms of a cold. Please note that it is important to check the directions on the packaging before use and not to exceed the dosage. Aspirin should not be given to children under 16 years of age.
Antihistamine tablets and cream
Antihistamine are often used to help control symptoms of health conditions associated with allergic reactions such as hay fever, allergic rhinitis, atopic eczema, urticaria, allergic conjunctivitis, insect bites or insect stings and minor food allergies. They cannot cure the underlying cause but they help to relieve symptoms.
Nasal sprays are most commonly used to treat colds or nasal blockage due to allergies. Nasal sprays can help relieve nasal congestion or blockage and improve signs of a cold.
Sore throat & cough lozenges
Throat and cough lozenges can be used when you are suffering with a sore throat. These are appropriate for use with adults and older children. Sucking on the lozenges can help relieve the symptoms of a sore throat.
Antiseptic cream can help relieve pain and infection to minor cuts, scratches, grazes, minor burns, bites and stings.
You can get plasters in a range of shapes and sizes. They can cover up minor cuts, grazes or scratches and prevent them from getting infected.
Thermometers can help measure your temperature. A thermometer can be placed under your arm, in your ear or in your mouth (depending on the type of thermometer used) to read your temperature.
